Wireframe for desktop app

My client was planning to develop a desktop application allowing a person to add subtitles to a video file they have on their computer and upload the resulting video to YouTube, Facebook and Twitter. It was totally in concept stage at the beginning. They had not have any solid plan and neither they had any detail spec. They shared their thoughts with me and asked me to help them to make their dream true. For this project I did a proper UX research and at the end they were happy with the result. Let me give you an UX journey of this project. I will try to explain all my process I did for this project (though I will skip some parts, process, information here because of my client’s business policy).

Business Goals

Main goal was to develop such a product which will be easy to use, user friendly interaction and slick look and feel. They do not want to make user think. They want user to download their app, install it and use it smoothly without thinking a bit.

Target Audience

Although same-language subtitles and captions are produced primarily with the deaf and hard of hearing in mind, many hearing film and television viewers choose to use them. This is often done because the presence of closed captioning and subtitles ensures that not one word of dialog will be missed. However the targeted audience are below:

  • Video Editor
  • Animator
  • Sound Editor
  • Videographer
  • Cinematographer
  • Movie lovers
  • Translator

Competitor Analysis

Amy is studying on International Relationship and she is a movie lover. She watches all kind of movies. She doesn’t know Korean language but she still watch Korean movies with subtitle because Korean movies making quality and stories are very unique. Amy usually search movies in youtube and watch those movies which has subtitles. Today she got an latest Korean movie from her friend Joana but unfortunately it doesn’t have subtitle.

Amy desperately looking for a way so that she could understand the movie. Finally she figured it out that this movie has a subtitle file and she need to download it as a SRT format. Also she needs a tool where she can merge them and publish a new video with subtitle. She downloaded lots of tools from online and installed them. But unfortunately she is totally confused about their features and their uses. She really needs a tool which will help her to add subtitle in a quick and easy to use process.

Name: Bob

Occupation: Cinematographer
Experience: 15 years

Bob is professional cinematographer. Last week he has finished a music video shoot. The singer of this video was an international singer. She wants to publish her video in youtube and in some social medias such as: Facebook, Twitter. So she wants to have subtitle in her music video. Bob is now searching for a tool where he can add subtitle easily and publish it from that tool as well.

He got so many tools in his search result. He downloaded and install some of them. But unfortunately none of them are useful. All of them are very complex and not so user friendly. Bob is really needs a tool which is very simple, clean and user friendly to use.

Probable Solution

A single platform/tool which solves all the problems below

  • Light weight tool for fast downloading.
  • Clean user interface.
  • User should travel easily the whole work process. So Interaction is a big issue here.
  • There should be search feature built in option where user can search subtitle for their video.
  • User should able to download subtitle files from the tool.
  • After encoding the video and subtitle, user should able to share their video to social medias.

After done with the wireframe process I had to sit with my users to validate the design process. I made some questionnaires for them and here some of the major points:

  • Why did you download this app?
  • What is your feeling when you first open this app?
  • Do you think it’s clean and clearly understandable what to do?
  • This app has a search feature. Did you find this useful?
  • How comfortable to add subtitle in this app?
  • This app has a share feature. You can now directly share your video to your friends. Is that useful to you?
  • Over all what is your thoughts about this app?
  • What would be your score for this app out of 10?
